Have you reached an age where society is suggesting you should consider retirement?

You can decide to follow the traditional retirement image - stop working and meander through the rest of your life. It’s a wonderful feeling….for the first six months.  OR

Do what so many others are doing and…

RE-INVENT YOUR LIFE   and   RE-CREATE THE REAL YOU.

Why re-invent your life?

Whether or not you continue working you can :

  • Continue being somebody!
  • Always feel happy answering “What do you do?”
  • Never feel old (we are all ageing from birth but who is old?)
  • Beat ageism and the mid-life crisis
  • Feel in control of your life
  • Stay resilient, happy, healthy and mentally alert
  • Put substance into what could be as many years as your working life to date
  • Enjoy staying involved in interests bigger than you
  • Respond positively to changing priorities in your life
  • Consciously build your life around the enjoyment factor that keeps you growing.

What do I mean by "re-creating your real self"?

Today recreation is seen as any non-work interest we do for fun and relaxation. It’s meaning is actually much deeper than that. The word “recreation” is derived from the Latin “recreare”… to create anew.   My 30 year career as a Recreation Planner has taught me to define recreation in a way that demonstrates its important personal development role as … ‘any creative expression of one’s talents and passions for the sheer intrinsic enjoyment of the experience”.

How does "Re-creating the real you relate to retirement?

Your natural talents and passionate interests are unique to you - they establish your unique identity as an individual. They are your strength and your lifelong resource for creating your true identity and real self.

Re-creating your real self is a process of identifying :

  • What gives you a deep sense of enjoyment about life, and
  • What drives your lifelong desire to keep on growing as a person (self-actualization).
 My unique structured process:

Enables you to:

  • Identify your known developed talents and passions
  • Identify past, present and potential future enjoyably energizing experiences
  • Re-discover talents and passions you used to enjoy until life got in the way
  • Seek new experiences that develop your under-developed or latent talents/passionate interests
My difference

I focus on:

  • The emotional, non-financial, aspects of planning what you are going to do with life if and when you retire from fulltime work
  • Your mental durability not just to cope with life after work but positively strengthen and sustain your mental fitness and thus live your expected longer life to the full

My expertize comes from 30 years of working professionally as a recreation planner helping people from all walks of life develop their favourite recreation and leisure interests and the positive impact those interests have on mental energy, self-esteem, life-enrichment , creative thinking and the many other personal development benefits that positive human behaviour unleashes.

When you lose yourself in an interest you love you find yourself!

Try before you buy?

I offer a free no obligation 30 mnute taster-consultation in which you will learn something interesting about the (unique) real you.  Email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details.

Full consultations are about 2 hours for individuals and about 4 hours for group consultations.

The Enjoyment Factor workshop creates a change in perspective on the life you are leading, a refreshingly energizing change in the way you think about your life and your desires for the future.

More a change of your thinking than a workshop.  You will view yourself and your life from the perspective of everything that makes you enjoy being you.

You will be making all the decisions. It’s your life and your values. I provide a sensitively-structured information and discussion program designed to help you come to some positive, productive and promising decisions about where you want to go in life and what changes – if any – you might make to your current circumstances. In an enjoyable sense, I will be encouraging you to “step outside yourself and observe your life in action”.

Fundamentally the process takes you back to basics, stripping the layers of expectations that life has gradually heaped upon you and have been inhibiting the creative expression of your natural-born talents, passions and interests.

I am not a medico, psychologist, or other health professional – though I mix professionally with such people. I am a leisure specialist. I have over 30 years of professional experience in recreation/leisure planning and development- what you might reasonably call the enjoyment profession - working with people of all ages, backgrounds and interests  in developing their leisure passions. Such work has taken me far beyond recreation and leisure pursuits to embrace all aspects of positive human behaviour at work, home and play.

Lifestyle issues are ageless, making these Enjoyment Factor workshops suitable for people of any age who feel a need to review their lifestyle.  Reasons frequently quoted for participating include:

  • improving or sustaining resilience to cope with prolonged excessive stress
  • especially suited to people planning the transition from a work-centred life to something new    (“your dessert years”)
  • work life harmony (more realistic/cost effective than work life balance)

Just some of the things you will learn:

  • how life satisfaction centres around your natural-born talents and passionate interests rather than the work you do
  • the many often emotional and personal development benefits not normally accorded to passionate leisure-based interests
  • how you can keep developing your natural talents for life, unrelated to whether or not you are in the workforce
  • a simple but highly effective self-portrait of what triggers positive behaviour in your unique life  ("I learned more about myself this way than from any psych assessment I have done" S Brown Adelaide.)
  • the key lifestyle review factors to keep in mind for the rest of your life.

Choose from the following options:

  • A 4-hour group workshop. No more than 8 persons per group.
  • A 2-hour private one-one individual consultation.  Available via Skype also.
  • Booking me to speak on this topic is a good starting point

The most effective way to deal with mental illness is to prevent it taking hold, i.e. to focus on ways of helping people of all ages stay mentally fit and healthy.  We are all aware of how to stay physically fit and healthy - whether or not we follow those rules is a personal matter.  But how much do you know about ways to stay mentally fit and healthy?

My approach is to identify and help you implement a natural way

So much of the publicity - and government funding - relating to mental health takes what I call the negative approach.  We focus on how to cure mental illness almost to the exclusion of working to prevent mental illness before it takes hold.

There is little we can do to reduce the extent of stress in today’s society. The best we can aim to do is to find the energy/resilience to thrive and progress in a continuing stressful environment – at work and in personal life.

This heavily emphasizes the “leading” or preventive approach – helping peopleto stay mentally and emotionally healthy.

My background is over 40 years of professional experience in recreation and leisure planning and development. This experience has given me extensive insight into positive human behavior and the benefits of such behavior to all facets of life, including stress.

Positive Human Behaviour

From my experiences, I have elicited five features of positive human behavior:

  • $The mind is working with purpose and enthusiasm
  • $There is mental energy driving the mind’s process  (my special area of expertise)
  • $ Self-esteem, self-confidence, self-belief and the sense of self-worth have been recharged
  • $ Its life-expanding, developing talents, passions and potential
  • $ It’s infectious to people around them
  • Any experiences – at work or in personal life – that reflect all of these features provide,  of course, a wonderful basis for sustaining mental and emotional energy and strong mental health.

But it’s when people are experiencing negative behavior arising from prolonged excessive stress that some interesting benefits can be sourced.  In such cases it becomes necessary to go outside the stress-generating cycle to find the unique emotional release-valve that works for that individual.  Usually such experiences are found in leisure interests totally remote from the working environment.

Creating enjoyable leisure experiences can, if experienced frequently enough, turn the ‘negativity ship’ around, eventually restoring the necessary energy to sustain resilience.  Any freely-chosen mind-absorbing leisure interest can do it.  The emphasis is not on whether the interest is physical or mental but on the degree to which it absorbs the mind and spirit (creating what some call “a state of flow”).

Leisure is Back in Business

A favourite leisure/recreation interest is nature’s way of managing stress. But it hasn’t always been seen this way.

  • For too long now, leisure has had a bad press, perceived in business as time for ‘doing nothing important’ and even as a competitor to work.  It is a perception that was created during the 19thCentury industrial revolution which brought mass production in factories to the world . Historically, leisure had previously been recognized as the creative state of mind when much of the world’s cultural, artistic and developmental advancements were achieved.
  • Those creative benefits are now in high demand in today’s knowledge-based business world.
  • Experiencing a passionate leisure interest also generates many added benefits, including increased self esteem, self belief, self confidence, talent/skills identification and development, and the courage to think for oneself again.
  • In this way, leisure changes its definition from ‘free time for self’ to one of re-creating a positive state of mind by creatively expressing one’s natural talents and abilities for the intrinsic enjoyment of the experience
  • Favourite freely-chosen leisure experiences generate a ripple effect of renewed energy, self- esteem and self-confidence flowing through to work and other aspects of daily life
  • Be aware there is still a perception that others might regard the enjoyment of a leisure pursuit as being irresponsible or slacking off. A sense of guilt about enjoying leisure can discourage such pursuits and this is an important issue to address in coping with today’s stressful lifestyle.

While all of these benefits can have be good for coping with daily short-term stress, the real benefits are in the sustained resilience to cope with stress over the long term and maintain a state of ongoing mental health and wellbeing.

Reviews written by readers of "Enjoy Being Proud of Who You Are - 52 Inspirational Life-Skills Messages for Teenagers" (published November 2013)

"What a great little book! And what a set of inspirational ideas for teenagers AND for their support workers, teachers, and parents. Attractively presented, the book provides 52 "inspirational life-skills messages for teenagers", which, in fact, could be life skills messages for everyone.

Taken at face value, the messages could be a bit vague and perhaps even daunting. Yet, if used for self reflection, as the basis for group discussions and as "take home" review themes, the messages are brilliant. Just to take one example: "Do what you love". The message, "Do what you love, love what you do and others will love you" would be brilliant for a workshop amongst young people. Ask and record "What do you love?" "Why do you love it?" "Are you doing what you love, if not why, and what can you do to change things?" "What do you need to do to be doing what you love?" What is meant by "…and others will love you" and why would they?". "Who amongst your peers and family do you feel are doing what they love? Do they "stand tall" because of this?" Might we understand them better if we knew their answers?"

Answers could be jotted down individually, or shared on a white board so that both group and self-understanding emerges. And then another "message" could be selected for the next meeting with the directions "Think about what this message means to you; what do you think it means to your friends, your family, your teachers? Might you share an understanding with those you don't get on with by discussing this message? What new messages might we add that are similar…but different?"

Clearly, "Enjoy Being Proud…" opens up a wealth of ideas, thoughts and reflections that will be helpful to everyone. The full benefit lies in working through the messages not just reading them and as such, the 58 pages is really worth 580! Maybe the author could start a blog: sharing the findings and responses to the "messages" of "Enjoy Being Proud…"

-   Dr Ken Marriott - Melbourne Australia December 2013

I gave a copy of the book to my teenage grandson who contributed to the following comments:
He found the messages were 'helpful' and provided him with 'the chance to reflect on experiences that they relate to'. He suggested the 'book would be perfect to have and use one quote each day'.
The topics cover a broad range that seems to relate to particularly older teenagers. My grandson suggested that it could have contained a section that deals with 'how others treat you in relation to who you have close relationships'. He would 'pass a copy on to someone else'.
On this basis I would give the book a four stars rating and suggest the author might consider updating this publication in the future, based on feedback from perhaps other younger teenagers.

Half of 1000 Australian workers polled this year by Good Technology - a mobile-security software company - said they read or respond to work e-mails from bed. (quoting from an article in the Professional Section of the Weekend Australian Dec 1/2). The article goes on to say a 2009 British study found nearly 1 in 5 employees spend 2-10 hours a week working from bed. One respondent said 'when you work with people around the world, it is difficult to avoid working from bed". Some people apparently find this a comfortably productive work setting. So many factors creeping into our daily lives that are causing us to be prepared to - and wanting to - work at any hour of the day or night. Another article on the same page urges businesses to keep up with technology if you want to attract and keep people.

Research into stress levels within the UK Civil Service came up with some findings the researcher didn't expect. He expected to find that the senior executives were the most stressed because of their high pressure work and major decision responsibilities.  Such was the disbelief in the findings that the study was repeated and with the same outcome.

What he found was the greatest stress levels were experienced in the lower staff levels. The identified reason? They had little or no control over their duties or the discretion of senior management to make changes.

So much of our stress levels today are due to our lack of control over what happens to us at work and in personal life.  It's not so much the changes as the lack of control over our ability to accept or reject change in our lives.

A freely-chosen leisure interest has huge stress-releasing benefits, not the least of them being that your favourite leisure/recreation interest is totally within your control - your choice of interest, when and where you enjoy it, with whom or alone, to what extent of skill you want to develop, and the fact that it generally reflects your talents and passions in life.

LEISURE AND CHANGE: PRESENTATION TO PARKS AND LEISURE 2012 CONFERENCE NEWCASTLE – 18 SEPTEMBER 2012

This paper has now been expanded - click here for more

Click here to see the slide presentation

SLIDE 1 - Leisure is Riding On the Crest Of A Massive Wave Of Change

Change is affecting everything – including the role and potential of leisure in today's high pressure society

Leisure is back in business- providing solutions to urgent global problems wider than the leisure industry

There is a global human energy crisis – we are burning human energy faster than we create it, with the inevitable result that burnout symptoms are everywhere – at work and in community life

SLIDE 2 – Stress Is Killing Health By Stealth

SLIDE 3 – I’ll Have What He’s Having!!

Resilience is built on the mental/emotional energy of the heart, mind and spirit

Leisure

Leisure hasn’t changed. Circumstances have. We need to re-state the definition of Leisure to demonstrate it offers solutions that people want, e.g.:

Slide 3 – Unleash Your Talents With Passionate Interests To Maximize Your Potential

Slide 4 - When You Lose Yourself In An Interest You Love, You Find Yourself

  • Increases self esteem, self confidence, RIPPLE EFFECT
  • Now passionate leisure pursuits are creating human energy through creative expression of the true self, talents, passions and potential

Energy

SLIDE 5 – Natural Energy Is Within You – personal, unlimited, natural, free, readily available

SLIDE 6 - Positive Human Behaviour – negative human behaviour creates the opposite effects. To find the energy needed to change the situation around, it is necessary to go outside the system that is generating the negative behaviour

SLIDE 7/8 – Work Life Balance / Work Life Harmony

Cannot deficit budget time. Always only 168 hours in the week; but you can deficit budget energy. Review energy allocation priorities to ensure a harmonious mix of energy in / energy out.

Business Benefits

SLIDE 9/10/11 – What’s The Ripple Effect Of Leisure To Business?

An energizing leisure interest doesn’t of itself change behaviour, it triggers a ripple effect that can eventually “turn the negativity ship around”

PLA - opportunities to reposition itself in the market place, serving wider than leisure industry

Conclusion

Leisure is back in business in a big way.

The business of resolving global human energy problems

The business of resolving corporate energy problems

The business of resolving personal energy problems

Leisure is back in business in a big way and it’s going to stay there for a long time to come.

"As an executive and business coach , I have always been impressed by Peter’s passionate determination to succeed in business and, importantly, to put into practice agreed actions arising from our meetings – a quality often found wanting in new business people.

Peter has shown courage in going into a business based on an “outside the square” - but very important - principle of personal development benefits to work productivity, gained from passionate leisure interests.  He has worked hard to articulate these benefits in ways that business minds can respond to positively.

As you work with Peter, you will quickly appreciate his energy and determination to go the extra mile in helping you or your staff grow and develop in business or personal life.

I am delighted to be asked to put a testimonial together for Peter and if you need anything further, please do not hesitate to call me on 0415 418 645"  Richard Levy, Business Behaviourist, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Website Testimonials

Genuine testimonials last a lifetime and I am extremely grateful for every one of the humbling messages sent to me by clients.  But some of them are now a bit long in the tooth. Frankly some of the best testimonials I have aren't written here. They appear as comments below articles and position statements I have published elsewhere on this website.  For example, see:

My Positive Perspective on Workplace Mental Health and Safety

"This is truly the kind of site that we need if we are into quality contents not to mention how everything was planned for the benefit of the readers. I would love to come back again for more information. Keep posting and I will be the first one to read them".

How to Stay Mentally Fit

"This is really an amazing article and the subject of the article is just admirable because the mental problem people face is depression, so staying mentally healthy is important task to do".

"Thanks for sharing these great tips about on how to stay mentally fit. Mental fitness is a very common problem nowadays, these tips will be very useful."

Re-defining Retirement

"This is an amazing post and I admire the way you have explained the feeling of fear. The retirement is hard for people mostly because for a long time (people) used to spend their life on a particular purpose and that purpose when goes they get afraid that the life is gone too."

Mental fitness is every successful team's top priority. It's more complex than the absence of mental illness. A mentally fit team is resilient, energised, engaged and welcomes the creative expression of each person's natural talents, passions and potential.

This workshop focuses on enjoyable and energizing ways in which working in your team can develop the mental fitness of each individual and the team.

 The workshop content recognizes:

  • If you want people to do what you want, you need to know they want more than money
  • Nature doesn't recognize differences between work and leisure talents
  • Corporate skills audits tend to ignore  leisure-based talents
  • Engaged staff know all their talents are recognized
  • Workaholism isn't courageous, it kills productivity...and sometimes people
  • Staff who enjoy their own leisure interests work better and probably live longer.

Exploring participants leisure pursuits identifies much about the natural talents and potential of each team member, the real person who looks out at the world through their eyes. The process maximizes the individual and team potential of each member.

This workshop can be adapted to address issues relating to work life balance and transition from work to retirement.

My clients say that I:

  • listen like there is no-one else in the world,
  • am non-judgemental and, importantly for you,
  • how much they appreciated their employer giving them the opportunity to do the workshop.

Peter Nicholls is your personal (or corporate) Lifestyle Mentor

Specializing in re-asserting the self-development benefits of:

The Enjoyment Factor

Any person, workplace, home or organisation not valuing the enjoyment factor has a major problem.

Enjoy improving the quality of your:

personal growth, work life harmony, mental and physical fitness talent development,  transition from work to your "dessert years".

My natural recipe for lifelong enjoyment is to regularly fertilize your natural-born talents with passionate interests and mix often with positive like-minded people.  When you lose yourself in an interest you really enjoy, you find yourself.

My sensitively-structured programs are backed by more than 30 years of professional experience in recreation/leisure planning and development, working with people of all ages, backgrounds and interests.  It's all about positive human behaviour, applicable at work, home and play.

My clients say I listen like they are the only person on the earth and they appreciate my non-judgmental approach.

Acorn to Tree

Why does Peter call himself Australia’s People Gardener?

Because people are a part of, not above, nature. You were born with unique natural talents and passions to enable your true potential to blossom.

But today's pressures and the expectations of others threaten to choke your natural life energy. I am highly experienced in re-introducing stressed people to their natural self.

The acorn's natural  destiny is to  blossom into a mighty oak.    Your talents create your destiny.

"Peter really does project the image of a gardener tending his 'plants', helping clients to develop fertile environments in which their lives can flourish and blossom.
